New tool offers numerous upgrades
A new, upgraded version of a popular wine cellar management tool is now available from the Cornell Center of Hospitality Research. Developed by Gary Thompson, a professor at the School of Hotel Administration, Wine Cellar 2.0, which is based on an Excel spreadsheet, offers numerous new features, as well as adjusting bugs from the original optimizer. The new tool is available at no charge at http://www.hotelschool.cornell.edu/research/chr/pubs/tools/. The tool includes both a sample that demonstrates how to use the optimizer, and a blank that allows users to input their own data.
“I’ve found considerable interest in determining when it’s best to open a bottle of wine,” noted Thompson. “As people have used the original optimizing tool, we’ve seen ways to add more helpful fields that make the tool even more effective. For instance, the original tool allowed only dollar values, but you now have other currency options. The user can also determine the number of bottles in categories of everyday, reward, and special occasion wines.”
The new tool’s added fields include details about a wine that are helpful in gauging when it is most drinkable. Those fields include the type of closure (e.g., cork or screwtop), the exact origin, and multiple ratings of a wine. Also, the tool provides several new sorts, including sorting by vintage or varietal on the inventory or purchases sheet, and it provides new charts and tracking capabilities.
Thompson has also written a detailed report that described the original tool and its concepts. Although fields have been added to the tool, that report, which is also available at no charge, will still be useful for tool users.
